What Ancient Hindus Knew About Dinasaurs ? There Is A Carving Of stegasaurus in Angkor Wat temple

The idea that ancient Hindus or other early civilizations might have known about dinosaurs is an intriguing but controversial topic. While Hindu texts describe many fantastic creatures, there is no direct reference to dinosaurs as understood by modern science. However, some points of interest arise when examining mythology, temple carvings, and interpretations of ancient scriptures.

1. Dinosaurs in Hindu Mythology?

Hindu scriptures like the Puranas and Itihasas (Ramayana and Mahabharata) contain descriptions of gigantic, reptilian creatures:

  • Makara: A crocodile-like or dragon-like creature often seen in temple art.
  • Sharabha: A beast that resembles a mix of a lion and an elephant, sometimes interpreted as a large prehistoric creature.
  • Nagas: Serpent-like beings with divine qualities, often depicted as large, powerful, and sometimes winged.

Though these descriptions resemble dinosaurs in some aspects, they are mythical beings rather than scientific records of prehistoric creatures.

2. The “Stegosaurus” Carving in Angkor Wat

One of the most famous claims about ancient knowledge of dinosaurs is a supposed carving of a Stegosaurus at the Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia (built in the 12th century CE). However:

  • Some experts suggest the carving might actually depict a rhinoceros or boar surrounded by decorative foliage.
  • Others argue it could be a mythological creature, not a dinosaur.
  • If the Khmer civilization had actually seen living dinosaurs, it would contradict established paleontology, as dinosaurs went extinct around 66 million years ago.

3. Fossil Discoveries and Interpretation in Ancient India

  • India has rich fossil deposits, including dinosaur fossils found in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
  • It is possible that ancient Indians discovered large bones and interpreted them as belonging to divine or mythological beings like the asuras (demons) or the rakshasas (giants).

Conclusion

There is no confirmed evidence that ancient Hindus had direct knowledge of dinosaurs. However:

  • They might have found fossils and created mythological stories around them.
  • Some temple carvings and mythical beings could be loosely compared to dinosaurs, but they are not scientifically accurate representations.
  • The Angkor Wat “Stegosaurus” is an interesting mystery, but its identity is debated.
